The LOOS Ensemble is part of the LOOS Foundation, and a unique ensemble of musicians and composers with a thrilling and outstanding reputation in modern music. Since the late 1980s this exceptional and highly specialised group initiated, generated and developed an extensive and impressive repertoire of contemporary music in which improvisation has a structural role. Characteristic for the performance style is a flinty, granite and confrontationally precise percussive sound. The LOOS Ensemble is in its performing style and repertoire choices closely related to a specific direction within the The Hague School, and is generally seen as its most prominent contemporary Dutch ensemble representation and inheritor. The incorporation of live electronics in combination with improvisation and other disciplines in art make that the LOOS Ensemble is adding a new dimension to the compositional results of the The Hague School of the past. For the reason of these aesthetics and performing style, as well as the specific qualities of the individual members, numerous composers have written extraordinary compositions for the ensemble in close collaboration with the group. In 2000 The LOOS Ensemble received the prestigious GeNeCoPrize 2000 because of exceptional merits in Contemporary Music of The Netherlands.

21:00 LECTURE/PERFORMANCE
CORNELIS DE BONDT (NL)

I am sitting in a room (1969) from Alvin Lucier for voice and electromagnetic tape.
I am sitting in a room different from the one you are in now. I am recording the sound of my speaking voice and I am going to play it back into the room again and again until the resonant frequencies of the room reinforce themselves so that any semblance of my speech, with perhaps the exception of rhythm, is destroyed. What you will hear, then, are the natural resonant frequencies of the room articulated by speech. I regard this activity not so much as a demonstration of a physical fact, but more as a way to smooth out any irregularities my speech might have.

21:45 PERFORMANCE LEON SPEK & MAURITS FENNIS (NL)
TRANS_MODULO

trans_modulo is a performance based on three principles: sound, parallel lines and a 3D surface. In the context of time these are used to explore multidimensional relationships in sound, image, the mind and their aesthetic possibilities. Léon Spek (NL) is active as an electronic instrument builder, electronic musician and as experimental sculptor. His works are a rich mixture of multiple disciplines; sound, image, electronics and programming all come together in areas such as performances and installation artworks.
Maurits Fennis (NL) is an electronic musical interface builder and programmer. He works at the intersections of spatial, visual and aural media. His recent endeavors incorporate the translation of digital signal processing techniques to geometrical volumes and structures.

22:10 PERFORMANCE YUTAKA MAKINO & TAKURO MIZUTA (JAPAN)
SCINTILLA (LIVE ELECTRONICS), SHAPES OF POINTS
(COMPOSITION)

Yutaka Makino encourages the listener to focus on the composed sound and the environment on which it is superposed. The purpose is to eliminate the dichotomy between the two, and consequently expand the listeners awareness of sound.
He currently resides in The Netherlands. His work focuses on composition, live electronic performances and spatial sonic environments. He has performed and exhibited works in Japan, the United States and Europe.

22:45 CONCERT RARA ENSEMBLE (IT)
Rome Freedom of Speech representation
Organisation: CONTROINDICAZIONI
Giancarlo Locatelli (IT), clarinets
Alberto Braida (IT), piano
Gianfranco Tedeschi (IT), bass
Fabrizio Spera (IT), spera drums
The music played by RaRa Ensemble is totally improvised. The hearing seems to be the main principle behind the multilayered sound of the quartet ORA, they are first recordng is about urgency, reaction, intensity, real time structures made of pure collective playing. The almost chamber music inspiration coming from a certain european sensibility is naturally confronted with a declared phisical sound approach. Even in the very dense parts, the group shows a natural tendency towards a complex but transparent kind of texture.

23:30 DJ/VJ PERFORMANCE DRIFTER TV (NL)
Drifter TV is a multimedia project combining electronic and audiovisual content in an eclectic mix, created by Nils Mühlenbruch (VJ Drifter) and Remko van der Drift (DJ Drifter). For those of you not familiar with Drifter TV; its all about the drifters. These weird alien boy-scouts have landed their vessel on planet earth in order to help out mankind. Their total lack of understanding about the way we humans function forms no obstacle for their bizarre and sometimes surrealistic undertakings. So, what are these creatures doing here, one might ask. Drifters are here, to protect and to serve. No more, no less.

20:00 CONCERT/VISUALS STUDIO LOOS & LUST (NL), RETICULATOR
Studio LOOS: Edwin van der Heide
Huib Emmer, Gerard Bouwhuis, Peter J.A. van Bergen
& LUST: Dimitri Nieuwenhuizen, Jeroen Barendse, Thomas Castro
Imagine sound and image as equal components; sound inspired, influenced and improvised by image, image created, generated and evolving by sound. Each on its own, but inevitably connected to eachother. Inspired by the theory of Rhizome, that allows for multiple, non-hierarchical entry and exit points in data representation and interpretation, a reinterpretation of sound and visual art defines the space in a live performance.

Studio LOOS is the environment in which the LOOS Foundation starts, investigates, explores, develops and experiments with the newest concepts and cooperations. The activities vary from the formation of new cooperations in music, dance and theatre, to workshops, lectures, the development of specific electronic devices and software, and the presentation of small concerts in Studio LOOS/DCR.

LUST, a design studio in The Hague, has worked in the fields of graphic design and new media since 1996. LUST considers design as a process. Each design stems from a concept that results from extensive research. In the course of its existence, LUST has developed a design methodology which has been described by others as process-based design or generative-systems based. This entails the developing an analytical process which leads eventually to something that designs itself.
